Approximately one million Americans die each year from cardiovascular disease. The American Red Cross reports that 200,000 of these deaths are due to cardiac arrest, which is the sudden and unexpected loss of heart function. According to OSHA, about 10,000 sudden cardiac arrest cases occur in the workplace each year. Waiting for the arrival of outside emergency medical services personnel significantly affects the survival rate of cardiac arrest cases. OSHA'S Position on AEDs States with federally approved state plans usually adopt standards that are identical to those of OSHA. However, some states have adopted different standards applicable to AEDs. They may even have different enforcement policies. Other states may require AED owners to obtain medical direction and oversight. AED Cost and Training Needs Many communities offer special CPR and AED training opportunities from various sources. Contact your local American Heart Association or American Red Cross to find out what training opportunities are available in your area.
