New Distributor Opportunities for 2011

As 2011 begins, many manufacturers will be looking to improve their welding processes and reduce overall cost. Gullco International, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio, has been encouraging its customers to try Electrode Stabilizing Ovens and KATBAK Ceramic Weld Backing to do just that.

The welder is able to achieve full penetration welds in a fraction of the time. This is due, in part, to the increase in weld deposit seen when ceramic backing strips are used in the weld procedure. Synergies Task Force Forms

The GAWDA Board of Directors has created a Synergies Task Force designed to work with the American Welding Society (AWS) to address specific areas of opportunity for both organizations. The Task Force is led by GAWDA President-Elect Bryan Keen, Thermadyne VP Jim Horvath and AWS VP Dean Wilson. “We believe there are significant benefits to members of GAWDA, AWS and the industry in general through the collaboration of the two organizations,” says Keen. The Task Force has identified 5 initial areas of focus:

1.  Communication of Benefits—Communicating the AWS benefits available to GAWDA members, including updates on the status of the Task Force’s accomplishments.

2.  Membership Growth—The membership committees of AWS and GAWDA will work together to expand membership in both organizations.

3.  Image of Welding—A subcommittee is being formed to address opportunities to enhance the image of welding and to attract people to our field for employment.

4.  Certification—Educating GAWDA members on training and certification programs available from AWS to all GAWDA members. As a start, a 3-hour introduction to AWS’ Certified Sales Representative class will be held at all GAWDA regional meetings in 2011.

5.  Welding Issues & Government Affairs—AWS’ Government Affairs Liaison Committee (GALC) and GAWDA’s Government Affairs Committee will work together to create a combined, stronger voice to promote the political issues relevant to the welding industry.

SJ Welding Supply Acquires Superior (Vineland, NJ) • South Jersey Welding Supply acquired Superior Welding Supply, located in Pennsauken, NJ. The transaction joins 2 neighboring, multi-generational family businesses and enhances South Jersey Welding Supply’s delivery of gases and welding equipment to the Delaware Valley. The company will retain all available Superior employees and will operate the acquired Pennsauken facility as the 4th location for South Jersey Welding Supply.

Sawyer Hires Manager (Tulsa, OK) • Sawyer Manufacturing hired Scott Persson as manager. In this position, he will work directly with President Tom Sawyer and Vice President Dave Hembree to assist with daily operations. Persson brings experience in systems, management and global client relations at several Fortune 500 companies, including PricewaterhouseCoopers, BP, Amoco and IBM. He holds an MBA and a degree in Management Information Systems. Persson is a 3rd-generation family business member.

Carbide Industries Certified to ISO (Louisville, KY) • Carbide Industries was certified to ISO 9001:2008 for its calcium carbide manufacturing plant in Louisville, KY. The operation received its ISO Certificate of Registration from National Quality Assurance, USA (NQA). Previously, in 2004, the company obtained its ISO Certificate of Registration for its fine-mesh calcium carbide desulfurization product used in the primary iron and steel industry. This latest achievement and registration of its Quality Management System covers the manufacturing, packaging and shipping of calcium carbide-based products and co-products in all particle size ranges.

 

TriCo Hosts Pig Feed (Woodland, CA) • More than 500 customers, friends and family took part in TriCo Welding Supplies’ annual Pig Feed event at the company’s Woodland headquarters. For the event, the company purchased hand-raised pork from local Future Farmers of America and 4-H participants and invited patrons to come for a cookout and to show off their racecars and motorcycles. “We do it to thank our customers, and it also brings in a lot of walk-ins who smell the food as they drive down the road,” says Mike Murphy, store manager. “The secondary walk-ins boost our sales for the next couple of months.”

Panikar To Lead Praxair Distribution (Danbury, CT) • John Panikar was appointed president of Praxair Distribution. He joined Praxair in 1991 and most recently served as vice president of the U.S. South Region of the company’s North American Industrial Gases business unit. “John has demonstrated outstanding leadership in a series of important management positions, both in the U.S. and Asia,” says Jim Fuchs, executive vice president. “We look forward to his continued success.”

Gas Innovations Expands (La Porte, TX) • Gas Innovations doubled the size of its facilities at its La Porte, TX, headquarters. The purchase encompasses 4 acres adjoining the company’s headquarters, located at the mouth of the Houston Ship Channel. Expansion plans include additional high pressure filling of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, tube trailer storage, cryogenic storage of methane or liquefied natural gas (LNG), and increased activity of hydrogen chloride cylinder filling.

Lampton Adds IT Manager (Wichita, KS) • Robie Mavis joined Lampton Welding Supply as IT manager. Robie comes to Lampton with over 10 years of experience in the IT and operations fields, spanning local and international operations. “Robie’s background in systems implementations, operations, server and desktop management, as well as website design and support, adds to the strengths of our IT department,” says Julie Nuessen, HR director. “He will be a pivotal member of the Lampton Welding Supply team as we continue to explore new technologies and processes.”

Tech Air Acquired (Danbury, CT) • Tech Air was acquired by CI Capital Partners, a New York-based private investment firm. “We are pleased to have reached agreement on a transaction that provides terrific value for our ESOP employee shareholders while preserving both our independence and our relentless focus on our customers,” says Myles Dempsey Jr., Tech Air president and CEO. Joost Thesseling, managing director at CI Capital Partners, says, “We believe Tech Air is well positioned to participate in the consolidation of the industry. We look forward to providing the company with a significant amount of additional equity capital to support its expansion through add-on acquisitions.”

Among the more unusual regulations that we might see in 2011, FDA is slated to publish draft guidance on the use of social media. A recent message from the Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising and Communications (DDMAC) says that the division has been researching draft guidance topics related to Internet/social media promotion of FDA-regulated medical products.

Proffit Joins Thermadyne (St. Louis, MO) • Thermadyne appointed Matthew Proffit as national accounts manager. Proffit will be responsible for the strategic management of existing customer relationships throughout North America and the leadership of new business development across a broad range of applications. He brings more than 12 years of national and international experience in industrial manufacturing sales management and business development. Proffit holds an M.B.A. from Indiana University and a B.S. in technical systems management from the University of Illinois.

Airgas Adds Spec Gases Biz (Radnor, PA) • Airgas acquired Conley Gas, a supplier of pure gases to the specialty gas industry. The La Porte, TX, business purifies, repackages, and distributes high-purity hydrocarbons such as methane and ethylene. Conley has additional operations in Stryker, OH, has 10 full-time employees and generates annual revenues of about $9 million. Airgas has consolidated and integrated the Conley business into the Airgas Specialty Gases business unit.
