GAWDA Taps into Economic Trends

Barry Asmus, Ph.D., senior economist at the National Center for Policy Analysis in Phoenix, AZ, shared his outlook for 2011 with Welding & Gases Today for its Annual Business Forecast, outlining 6 unstoppable economic trends impacting our world, our economy, our industry and our business. Among the trends he points out is a shift in power from the Pacific Ocean, anchored by the U.S. and Japan, to the Indian Ocean, where India and China will be major factors in the global economy. Asmus is optimistic about economic recovery in 2011, projecting that local, labor-intensive organizations in the service sector will benefit from increased customer spending. “2011 will be the first year that will start to look better,” he says. To read Asmus’ complete economic forecast, head over to WGT Online and check out “Six Unstoppable Economic Trends In 2011.”

Changes to Driver Hours of Service

On December 29, 2010, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration released a new proposal for drivers’ hours of service that impacts daily driving limits, daily on-duty period and weekly restart requirements for commercial vehicle operators. Within the proposal are a number of changes that would require reconfiguration of dispatch and driver management protocols for distributors. The current proposed rulemaking allows 60 days for public comments. A final rule is expected by mid-2011.

Among the more significant changes, the agency is considering reducing the daily driving limit from 11 hours to 10 hours. The proposal also introduces a 14-hour “driving window,” allowing for a maximum of 13 hours for both driving and non-driving-related tasks.

Find the complete changes included in the proposal at Welding & Gases Today Online.
