As Term Nears End, President McCall
Reflects on Past Year

Jenny McCall
Jenny McCall

The 2009-2010 year was one of progress for the Gases and Welding Distributors Association. Among the association’s achievements was the inauguration of its first female president, Jenny McCall. Under her guidance, GAWDA unveiled a new website to serve its members and established a new management team through its partnership with the American Welding Society. McCall and the Executive Committee made strides in improving the association’s committees, establishing new ones and changing all of the chairs, while increasing members’ involvement.

President McCall challenged members to Get In The Game, and they did just that. “Members got off the sideline and got more involved than ever before,” she says, “showing how much GAWDA members care about the industry.” 140 distributors and suppliers stepped up to take part in association committees. A record number of members participated in the Spring Management Conference in Chicago, while prospective members witnessed the value of networking and education the association has to offer at GAWDA’s regional meetings.

Reflecting on her year as president, McCall says, “It’s been a great year. I’ve met many great people who share my passion for the industry. I’ll always cherish the long-lasting friendships I developed.” As for what’s ahead, she says, “GAWDA is poised to continue to grow its membership. We will keep an eye on future consolidation of industry companies and we must continue to find ways of drawing people to the gases and welding industry.”

McCall assures members they will be in good hands with President-elect Lloyd Robinson. “Lloyd is a great asset to the industry. My advice for him as President is to be patient.” Laughing, she adds, “That’s good advice for a New Yorker from the Bronx.” Jenny McCall will present her final address as President on Sunday, October 3, at GAWDA’s 66th annual convention, before she hands the reins over to Robinson.

We thank her for her dedication and leadership throughout this past year.

Aloha, Convention Goers

GAWDA’s 66th Annual Convention is just over a week away. The convention kicks off on Saturday, October 2, at the Grand Wailea Resort in Maui, HI, and runs through October 5. Members will have a chance to network and learn more about the industry against the backdrop of a tropical setting. Some of the great events planned include the contact booth program, golf tournament, a presentation from Super Bowl champion Joe Theismann and much, much more. Find more information about the convention and see who’s attending. Keep an eye out for a recap and photos of the event in the next issue of GAWDA Connection.

WGT Launches New Website

In what is the culmination of months of work behind the scenes, Welding & Gases Today now has a new online home. The URL remains the same—www.WeldingAndGasesToday.org—but the site itself has undergone a complete transformation. The new website has been online for a week, and the response has been encouraging. Members are taking advantage of the new interactive format, which allows access to new content in real time. In addition to fresh content, the website features a new column called “On the Edge,” where members can weigh in on the more controversial topics surrounding the industry.

Looking for social media? The new website is home to 3 GAWDA Media blogs, delivering engaging and sometimes offbeat topics from the world of gases and welding. A Twitter feed on the home page shows what people are saying about the association and its publications. The website also boasts videos, member news and more than 600 archived articles from the pages of Welding & Gases Today and GAWDA Edge.

Stop by today and be the first to comment on an article, and see your name and company listed on the homepage. Then, be sure to return several times a week to stay updated on your industry and the issues that will impact the way it does business.

See the new site at WeldingAndGasesToday.org.

Overheard on the Blog:

From the GAWDA Media Blog:
“Twitter led me to the blog about the Airgas/Air Products feud and I just wanted to say thanks for the breakdown of what’s going on! It seems like every time I turn around, something new has happened in the saga.

Keep the helpful tweets coming. I will be watching for them!”
- Theresa
