Joe Theismann Keynotes Convention

Former Washington Redskins star quarterback and Super Bowl champion Joe Theismann will join GAWDA members at the 2010 Convention in Maui. Theismann is currently the host of The Joe Theismann Radio Show and an analyst for the NFL Network’s Playbook. Theismann joins the roster of accomplished speakers who will speak at this year’s convention.

2004-05 GAWDA President Bob Thornton, president of South Jersey Welding Supply, turned the mic on Theisman in an interview for the September issue of Welding & Gases Today. While Theismann didn't talk much about the infamous leg crushing (See it here. Warning: graphic content), Thornton describes the conversation with the sports star as insightful and interesting. “Joe faced a crushing blow at the height of his career and was able to turn that experience into a vehicle for growth in an environment he loved. He is a great addition to the GAWDA convention speaker lineup.”

In honor of Theismann’s appearance at the convention, the fall issue of Welding & Gases Today will feature a retrospective of GAWDA members in their football uniforms from high school to professional levels of competition. Readers will face the challenge of identifying who’s who from among their peers. The person who can identify the most players will receive a $100 gift certificate to the NFL shop, just in time for football season. S. J. Smith Co. Completes Succession Plan (Davenport, IA) • S.J. Smith Company, Inc. has actively prepared for the transition of the company to the third generation of family ownership and management. Effective November 1, 2010, and in conjunction with the company’s succession Management Plan, the following changes will go into effect: Richelle Smith-Brecht will become president and chief operating officer. Timm Evans will become executive vice president. John Hanlon will be vice chairman. Richard Smith will remain chairman of the board and chief executive officer. Founded in 1950 by Sylvester and Helen Smith, the company has grown from a single store front, three-person business to a four-state, 13-location business. Their son, Richard Smith, joined the business after college and military service and became president in 1972.

nexAir’s hydrogen facility is the only one within 250 miles of Memphis, TN.

nexAir Adds Hydrogen Filling Operations (Memphis, TN) • nexAir completed the construction of a new hydrogen filling facility at its operations in Memphis. The hydrogen facility houses a 9,000-gallon hydrogen storage tank and features remote monitoring through a secure Internet channel. nexAir expects substantial growth to its hydrogen business with the new plant.

Matheson Unifies Brand Name (Basking Ridge, NJ) • Matheson Tri-Gas, Inc. changed its brand name to Matheson. The company’s full legal name remains Matheson Tri-Gas, Inc. “In the six years since 2004, we have added seven more companies to our proud family,” says Bill Kroll, chairman of Matheson. “It’s time that we are known under one brand name, with one set of employees, one product line, one mission, and one identity.”

Airgas Honors National Branch Winners (Randor, PA) • Airgas, Inc. announced the winners of its National Branch of the Year award, selected from more than 875 branches nationwide. The company’s Nashville, TN, branch was chosen as the best of Airgas’ large branches; the Logan, UT, branch was selected from among small branches. Selections were based on fiscal 2010 performance, customer service and safety performance. National Branch of the Year winners receive trophies constructed from size 125 cylinders donated by Taylor-Wharton, which have been powder-coated platinum and mounted on a welded aluminum base.

Praxair To Open Carbon Dioxide Plant (Danbury, CT) • Praxair, Inc. will open a new carbon dioxide purification and liquefaction plant in Hopewell, VA. The company will purchase carbon dioxide from Osage Bio Energy produced as a byproduct of ethanol fermentation in the company’s barley-to-ethanol bio-processing operation. Praxair’s new plant will produce up to 450 tons per day of carbon dioxide, which will be used in food freezing, food processing and for beverage applications. The plant is scheduled to start up in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Richard A. Lake, Former President/CEO of National Welders Supply

Richard A. Lake began his career in the industrial gas and welding supply business in 1971 after 14 years in engineering sales with Westinghouse Electric. He was a regional sales manager at National Welders Supply in Charlotte, NC, from 1971 to 1973, but left the company to work at Selox in Atlanta, GA, and Carolina Welding in Raleigh, NC. In 1979, Mr. Lake returned to National as a cryogenic sales engineer and was promoted to cryogenic and bulk gas sales manager and later to vice president of sales and distribution, where he remained until 1998, when he was appointed president and CEO of National Welders Supply. He retired in 2004. His aggressive sales initiatives and his leadership were instrumental to National Welders’ extraordinary growth over the past 25 years.

Described as a loving husband, father, friend and avid golfer, Mr. Lake is survived by Sheila, his wife of 53 years, two children Allen and Kelly, and four grandchildren

Play Golf in Paradise • A highlight of every convention is the annual golf tournament. This year’s tournament will be held Monday, October 4, on the Gold and Emerald courses of the Wailea Golf Club, rated among the best courses in the country by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest.

The Gold Course, built in 1993, is host to the Senior PGA Tour’s Senior Skins game every January. The 7,070-yard par 72 layout plays over the foothills of Haleakala. The Emerald Course, built in 1995, is considered a friendlier course for high-handicap players. The 18th hole is its most famous, a 553-yard par-5 tryst with a downhill slope. Both courses have magnificent ocean and mountain views.

The tournament is limited to 144 players. Registration fee includes transportation, greens fee, cart and continental breakfast. Deadline to register is September 3.

GAWDA Gives Back

GAWDA Gives Back Returns to Its Roots • Started in 2000, GAWDA Gives Back has developed into a great tradition, accruing donations of almost $1 million over its 10-year existence. Every year, GAWDA selects a charity in the community where the Annual Convention is being held. Under the leadership of 2000 President Dave Mahoney, GAWDA’s first Gives Back campaign took place in Maui, with donations going to the Maui Adult Day Care Center. This year, President Jenny McCall selected Child and Family Service, Hawaii’s oldest and most established nonprofit organization, as the recipient of GAWDA’s donations. The organization’s Community Closet program, which supports mothers in need, will be the benefactor of all gifts. GAWDA Gives Back will establish a line of credit at a local retailer for the purchase of baby supplies, such as diapers, wipes, formula, baby food, blankets and car seats.
